What is Fluoride Varnish?

Fluoride varnish is a dental treatment that can help prevent tooth decay. Fluoride
varnish is made with fluoride, a mineral that can strengthen tooth enamel (outer
coating on teeth).  Fluoride varnish treatments cannot completely prevent cavities,
but regular fluoride varnish treatments can best help prevent decay.

How does Fluoride Prevent Cavities?

Fluoride inhibits loss of minerals from tooth enamel and strengthen areas that are
weakened and beginning to develop cavities. Fluoride also affects bacteria that
causes cavities, discouraging acid attacks that break down the tooth.

How is Fluoride Varnish Applied?

Fluoride varnish is simple and only takes a few minutes. The varnish is painted on
the top and sides of each tooth with a small brush. It is sticky but hardens once it
comes in contact with saliva. Your child may feel the hardened varnish with his
tongue but will not be able to lick the varnish off.

Does my Child Need Fluoride?

Our pediatric dentist considers many factors before recommending fluoride. Your
child’s risk of developing dental decay and dietary sources of fluoride are important
considerations. Some risk factors are:

  • History or previous cavities
  • Diet high in sugar or carbohydrates
  • Orthodontic appliances
  • Certain medical conditions

Fluoride varnish coupled with regular brushing using the right amount of
toothpaste with fluoride, flossing regularly, getting regular dental care, and eating a
healthy diet will help prevent decay. Call our office today to schedule an
appointment for your child.
